Treatments

Reflexology

Reflexology is an increasingly popular, deeply relaxing therapy based on the theory that reflex points in the hands and feet represent different areas in the body. By using gentle techniques similar to massage, I am able to stimulate these reflex points in order to provide symptomatic relief from many conditions and injuries.

Hot Stone Reflexology

Hot Stone Reflexology is very similar, however; as well as using my hands to work the reflex points, warm basalt pebbles of different sizes are also used to massage and stimulate the reflexes in the hands and feet. In Hot Stone Reflexology, I work right up to the knee rather than just the feet and ankles; this treatment is extremely relaxing and is especially effective for runners, walkers or anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet.

Sports and Remedial Massage

The term ‘Sports Massage’ is actually quite misleading, as anyone – not just the sporty – can benefit from a Sports Massage. A Sports or Remedial Massage is a deep tissue massage that involves the use of many different Soft Tissue Therapy techniques such as;

  • Soft Tissue Release
  • Muscle Energy Technique
  • Neuromuscular Technique
  • Friction Techniques
  • Myofascial Techniques
  • Positional Release Technique

The treatment will also generally include a postural assessment, nutrition advice and rehabilitation exercises.

Kinesiology taping

Kinesiology taping is a great way to support injured or weakened muscles, reduce swelling or support unstable or weakened joints. It is particularly effective when treating conditions such as:

  • Plantar Faciitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Knee Pain
  • Hamstring/Calf Strain
  • Back Pain
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy
  • Tennis/Golfer's Elbow
  • Controlling Oedema(swelling) in any area

Kinesiology taping is most effective when used in conjunction with other soft tissue techniques, however it can also be used alone.

Symptoms relieved

Each of these therapies can provide symptomatic relief from a multitude of conditions and injuries including:

  • Sports injuries
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Postural problems
  • Back pain
  • Migraine
  • Digestive issues
  • Insomnia
  • Stress related symptoms
  • Infertility
  • Endometriosis/fibroids
  • Hormone imbalances
Please note, reflexology and massage do not claim to heal or diagnose.

What your treatment will involve

Sports and Remedial Massage

After your initial consultation and postural assessment, which usually takes 15 – 20 minutes, you will be asked to lie on a massage couch.

Due to the nature of massage, you will be asked to wear a pair of shorts and (for females) a bra or vest top. Unlike a spa massage, a Sports Massage means you will be asked to move around on the couch as we work on different areas. Towels will be used to cover you and make you feel warm and comfortable.

Despite what you may have heard, Soft Tissue Therapy should never be painful. If there is an injury we are working on, there may be times of discomfort as we work to improve range of movement and strength, but you will never be pushed beyond your limits. Deep tissue massage is often described as a ‘good’ pain, and by the end of the treatment you should feel both energised and relaxed.

The areas covered in a massage completely depend on the nature of the reason for your visit, so the massage is really tailored to each individual.

Excluding the initial consultation time, massage treatments are available in ½ hour and 1 hour appointments.

Reflexology/Hot Stone Reflexology

After your initial consultation, which usually takes about 15 minutes, you will be asked to sit in a comfortable chair, similar in style to a sun lounger. Please wear loose trousers so that they can be rolled up as far as the knee.

After cleansing the feet, a balm will be applied and the treatment will begin.

Using gentle movements with my fingers, thumbs and hands I will then begin a sequence of movements that will cover the entire foot. It’s a lovely feeling and many people fall asleep.

The treatment will last approximately 1 hour for Reflexology and 1.5 hours for Hot Stone Reflexology, and afterwards you will be offered a drink of water and we will discuss my findings and the next course of action.

The Less Stress Program

Stress has become a part of our everyday lives, it’s something we have come to accept as part of modern day living. The pressures of juggling work, family, friends, money, going to the gym – the assumption that we must present a perfect image and hold it all together is something I have learned effects the majority of my clients. Male, female, athletic, office based, older and younger; and that’s before you throw in any kind of complication such as illness, injury, fertility worries, hormonal imbalances or anything else that life may throw at us.

The Less Stress Program is a combination of massage and hot stone reflexology that I have developed by working closely with clients going through a particularly stressful time in their lives. By combining the two therapies over a 6 week period we are able to combat the physical effects that stress can have on our bodies. Massage will relieve the muscle tightness; 60 minutes of working through not just the obvious tension areas such as neck and shoulders, but a full body deep tissue massage. The following week we will tackle the more internal effects of stress through a 90 minute hot stone reflexology session. Side effects of stress can often mean headaches, digestive and sleep issues. Hot Stone Reflexology is a deeply relaxing way of restoring balance to the body.

By alternating this process over a 6 week period, we are able to tackle stress and its related issues using a thorough and consistent approach whilst carving out some time, each week, for you to switch off from the pressure of everyday life.

“Following a particularly busy period of high stress levels (getting married), Emma and I started a weekly dual cycle to combat stress and an existing sports injury. I was also suffering with an imbalance of hormones which left me tearful, anxious and finding it hard to deal with difficult situations. After each session I can confirm the following:
- After each session I felt relaxed and switched off
- The sports massage was physically beneficial and the hot stone reflexology highlighted the areas I was experiencing problems
- I slept incredibly well after each session
- I felt more balanced, in control, relaxed and re-energised after my sessions with Emma.”

Michelle Downy Squire

“I have enjoyed every time I have visited Emma. She is so friendly, approachable and easy to talk to. The reflexology treatment has not only relaxed me but made me aware of areas of health I can improve on. I am always amazed by what feet can reveal about the whole body. I have come out of every treatment relaxed in both mind and body whilst at the same time feeling re-energised to improve my health!”

Nicola Shaw

“After having attended a number of massage therapists over the years, I can only say that Emma is absolutely superb – the most competent and thorough I have met. She has helped me sort out a number of sports related issues, including rehabilitating from a hip operation. I would highly recommend without hesitation.”
